Give me vintage cars, a little history, and a good lunch, and I’m happy! But my favourite part was unexpected: how much Gasoline Alley reminded me of my grandparents. Funny how old cars and signs can bring back memories you weren’t even looking for.

You don’t need to make it a family outing. Go with a friend, grab lunch, and take your time exploring!

Waterton Lakes is one of those places where the sc

Waterton Lakes is one of those places where the scenery changes almost before you realize it. You’re driving through wide-open prairie, and then suddenly the Rockies are right there in front of you, with Waterton Lake tucked between the mountains.

The town itself is tiny. A few streets, a handful of shops and restaurants, and everything is pretty much walkable.

But for such a small place, we ate REALLY well. And somehow managed to try a little bit of everything.

☕ Switchback Micro Cafe — tucked inside the Tamarack, for espresso before the trails

🌭 Wieners of Waterton — a rite of passage since 2010, always a line-up. Not fine dining, didn’t need to be
 🥩 Lakeside Chophouse & Wine Bar — lakefront restaurant in the village, mountain views from every seat
 🍝 Red Rock Trattoria — cozy Italian that stays open through the off-season
 🕯️ Lamp Post Dining Room at Kilmorey Lodge — fine dining in a lodge that’s burned down twice and come back both times
 🫖 Afternoon Tea at the Prince of Wales — full British afternoon tea in a hotel on a bluff above the lake, since 1927

Waterton is small and books up fast in peak season — reserve ahead, especially the Chophouse patio and tea service.

We chased dark skies in Waterton but the weather had other plans.

We drove down from Calgary to Waterton Lakes National Park for the Dark Sky Discovery Days festival, with an overnight stop in Lethbridge. The plan was crisp mountain air, clear nights, and world-class stargazing.

By day, everything was amazing. We enjoyed afternoon tea at Prince of Wales, explored Red Rock Canyon and Cameron Lake. But by nightfall, the weather completely turned.

With heavy cloud cover blocking the sky, our outdoor telescope night was officially scrubbed. That is when the organizers fired up Plan B: an inflatable planetarium.

So we ended up inside a dome, watching an exact simulation down to the minute of the night sky above, while the wind blew outside. It was not the night sky we planned on, but southern Alberta definitely gave us a trip to remember!
